Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Report Flags Surge in Punjab Police Encounter Killings
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has released a report with alarming rate of killings in Punjab under police encounters. The report shows that in last eight months, more than 924 people were killed in this extrajudicial killings so far, since the Crime Control Department was established in April 2025, which is a huge increase compared to the past. The report points out tragic incidents, such as that of Zubaida Bibi, who lost five members of her family in one day due to a police raid. Although the government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, asserts that the increase in extrajudicial killings has resulted in a 60% decrease in crime, human rights organizations claim that the police are using "copy-paste" scripts to explain the killings, which bypass the courts altogether and disregard the constitutional right to a fair trial.
